I am sorry to hear that its come to this. When I was a kid the Irish activist Bobby Sands underwent a hunger strike to raise awareness for the Irish cause, and before he was done people all over the world had to confront what the British were doing in Northern Ireland. I will mourn Khader’s passing, and his sacrifice. Perhaps because he’s done this, it will help to open some eyes or to steel the limbs and the spirits of those who continue to work for justice and dignity. Perhaps those eyes won’t open, but Israel should take note. This man’s sacrifice is another sign that the days of the ethnocratic state are over, and the time has come to forswear the treatment of Palestinians as a subjugated people who can be manipulated and sacrificed. The longer the leadership in that country refuses to embrace human dignity and a new way of moving towards the future, the longer it will be mired in the past. Khader’s name will haunt them for all the days and weeks and months and years of occupation and de-humanization, and Israel and its government will pay a steeper and steeper price in the court of public opinion. If this is not a turning point, it points to one down the road, and soon.
My heart goes out to the family of Khader Adnan. Peace be upon you all.
